My Story

My name is Frederick York, and I’ve spent more than 45 years working in analog and digital circuit design across the military, medical, and industrial fields. With advanced degrees in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University and NJIT, my career has been shaped by projects in motor design, robotics, and medical devices.

Along the way, I’ve designed servo systems, power supplies, and robotics using frameless DC motors and high-precision encoders. I’ve had the opportunity to lead projects ranging from pulmonary therapy systems to automated lab robotics, and I hold 19 patents from my work. Today, I’m sharing my experience in DC servo motor design with the hope that it provides engineers and students with useful insights and practical tools.

Relevant motor design experience for this site

FARO Technology Inc., Lake Mary, Florida
In the area of 3-D Measurement, designed a Robot Arm using frameless 3 Phase DC Motors and 26-bit Sin-Cos encoders.  Also spun this design off to provide a turn table to aid in laser scanner measurements.

Sparton Electronics Inc., DeLeon Springs, Florida
Responsible for the design of the power supply system, thermal and servo loop controls for a Rapid Infusion Device.  This device is transportable and must output fluids at 37 CO over an infusion range of from 10 mL/hr. to 1.2 L/min. Responsible for the design, development and release to manufacturing of a battery operated endoscope irrigation unit (motor drive controller was state machine based).  Project manager / system designer for an automatic slide reparation machine for pap smears.  Performed as lead electrical engineer for a pulmonary bed therapy system. Designed robot control (6-axis) for handling DNA microplates at cryogenic temperatures (-86 oC). Motors were mounted outside of the chamber (lead screw transition).

Haemonetics Company Inc., Braintree, Massachusetts
Was responsible for several peristaltic pump and centrifuge designs.

Coulter Biomedical Research Corp. / Coulter Electronics, Concord, Massachusetts / Hialeah, Florida.
Responsible for the design and development / microprocessor based subsystems; applied in a computer Pattern Recognition system for automated blood cell identification. Designs included stepper motors for slide loading and magnification switching.
